Verbena Methodist to host outdoor movie
Verbena United Methodist Church will host an outdoor movie at “Verbena Gazebo Park” on Friday as part of the church’s “Screen on the Green” community outreach.
“Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” will be the movie shown at the park on Friday, Aug. 21 at 8:10 p.m.
“We thought it would be a good movie to show in August when kids are going back to school,” Verbena Methodist Pastor Hunter Pugh said.
The “Screen on the Green” outreach program began approximately three years ago when members of the church wanted to find ways to be more active in the community, Pugh said.
“For the past several years, we’ll show movies in the park from time to time,” Pugh said. “We like to offer a safe space for kids on Friday nights.”
The event is free to the public, and concessions such as popcorn, drinks and cotton candy will be available free of charge.
“When people usually go to the movies, they have to travel to Prattville or Montgomery,” Pugh said. “This gives them something to do right in their backyard.”
Attendees are welcome to bring blankets and chairs to the Verbena Gazebo Park, located on County Road 59.
Pugh encourages those attending to park their vehicles along the sides of the gazebo park.
“We’ve had anywhere from people to 300 people out there before,” Pugh said. “Everyone is welcome to come.”
Pugh said the church provides concessions for those in attendance through the church’s outreach fund.
“We do a lot of serious things at the church. Above all, we learn to follow Jesus Christ,” Pugh said. “We just want to give the community a lot of opportunities to have fun, too. It’s a different kind of outreach.”
“Monsters University” was the last movie shown through the “Screen on the Green” outreach in May.
Pugh said while the church has no immediate plans for other movie showings, the community should be on the lookout for upcoming events through Verbena Methodist Church.
“We’re trying to start doing some new things like showing movies inside the church for the community to attend,” Pugh said. “We just want to stay involved in our community.”
