Panthers top another county foe

Jemison opened its 2013 home volleyball schedule with its second win of the week over a county foe, knocking off Thorsby by a 25-19, 25-10, 25-10 margin on Thursday.

The Lady Rebels would not go quietly in Game 1, however, erasing an early 13-6 deficit to get within three at 19-22. When the going got tough, though, the Lady Panther front line of Cassani Steele and C.C. Wright got going, giving JHS the ball back and a chance to serve out the game.

Senior Wendy Spigener did just that, blasting her second and third aces of the game to shut down the Thorsby comeback bid and give Jemison the decision in Game 1.

In Game 2, it was the combination of Steele and Denten Ellison that did all the damage at the net, as Steele registered a pair of solo blocks and Ellison banged out a trio of

kills to hold the Lady Rebels at bay.

Setters Emily Spain and Ashley Dutton also came up big, combining for five service aces and six assists to help the Lady Panthers jump out to an 11-1 lead and cruise to victory.

Game 3 was much the same as the first two, with Steele and Wright dominating net play with five kills and two blocks between them. Spigener registered three more service aces

of her own, while Spain and Dutton combined for six assists.

For the match, Steele had six kills and three blocks, Wright totaled five kills

and two blocks, and Ellison finished with four kills and seven digs. Dutton had seven service aces and seven assists, while fellow setter Spain had nine assists.

The Lady Panthers travel to Oak Grove this weekend for the 10th Annual Grapple

in the Grove Tournament.

Thorsby’s junior varsity team pulled out a win on Thursday over Jemison, 27-25, 10-25, 15-12.
