Thorsby Christmas parade has new route

The Thorsby Town Council discussed the town’s Christmas parade being rescheduled for Dec. 8 at 9 a.m., following the rainy weather last weekend, during the meeting on Dec. 3.

It will feature a new route. Staging for the parade will now take place on the street behind Vertillo Pizza and Grill and march down U.S. 31 to Farmhouse Café.

The new route was the result of the sudden reschedule, which did not allow the necessary time needed to close the railroad that runs along U.S. 31.

The National Weather Service lists a 90 percent chance of precipitation on Dec. 8.

Thorsby Public Works Director Terry Jackson and the Council discussed it having been a while since the town has been able to pick up limbs.

The town’s skid-steer loader has been down and is still undergoing repairs.

According to Jackson, the town is going to borrow a truck from the City of Clanton to help, but it could be weeks before the skid-steer is operational again.

“It was going great until the skid-steer broke down,” Jackson said.

It has been about three months since they have been able to pick up.

According to Mayor Robert Hight, the town does not have any other equipment with a claw on it, which is needed to get the job done.

Councilwoman Marilyn Collins motioned that the town begin searching around for estimates on limb trucks. It was unanimously approved.

According to Councilman Neil Benson, one of the problems he has seen is that a lot of the limb trucks for sale are far larger than what the town needs.

In other news from the meeting:

  • The bid package for the demolition of the old school building will end for sealed bids on Dec. 19 at 10 a.m.
  • The Council approved to buy a quarter page-advertisement in the 2019 Progress Magazine.
  • The minutes from the Nov. 19 Council meeting were approved.
  • It was approved to pay the bills and transfer the funds.
