BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Devils pull away in second half

Verbena’s girls basketball team pulled away in the third quarter for a 46-36 win over Jemison on Tuesday.

The score was tied at 19 at halftime, but the 10-1 Red Devils outscored host Jemison 11-4 in the third period and 16-13 in the fourth.

Marqueska Deramus paced VHS with 21 points, while teammate Lacey Short had nine points.

Shelby Griffin led Jemison with 15 points and seven rebounds, and made five of six attempted free throws.

Laura Vinzant contributed eight points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists; Shelby Lopez had six points, six rebounds and three assists; Morgan Lucas had four points and two assists; and Shayna Robinson had 10 rebounds and three points.

Verbena’s girls also defeated Isabella, 34-31, on Monday at Isabella.

The Devils host St. Jude on Friday and then play in next week’s Chilton County Basketball Tournament.

Jemison’s boys defeated Verbena, 66-57, despite 30 points from Verbena’s Jaryus Wilson.

Both sets of Bears fall to R.C. Hatch

Billingsley’s boys and girls team lost to R.C. Hatch on Tuesday, 87-58 and 50-32, respectively.

Carlos Caver posted a double-double for the Bears boys with 24 points and 11 rebounds.

Justin Snow had 13 points and six rebounds, and A.J. Tyus had 11 points and eight rebounds.

The loss puts BHS at 6-7 overall and 2-1 in area play.

Thursday’s game against Thorsby, which begins at 5:30 p.m., is an area contest, as is Friday’s game against Maplesville.

Lori Davis led the Billingsley girls with 16 points.

Madison Price added eight points, and Shannon Massey and Payton Wallace had four points each.

Elmore County drops host Rebels

Sharonda Cooper’s 18 points weren’t enough to keep Thorsby’s girls from a 49-32 loss to Elmore County on Tuesday.

The THS boys lost, 70-46.

Other local teams lose

Several other local teams lost on Tuesday.

Brookwood’s girls defeated Chilton County, 47-18, and the CCHS boys lost, 53-32.

Keith’s boys defeated Maplesville, 66-33, and Keith’s girls defeated Maplesville, 51-32.
