Maplesville girls win first varsity game of county tournament

Maplesville and Thorsby tipped off the first round of the Chilton County girls basketball tournament Monday night at Chilton County High School, with the Devils coming away the victor, 59-35.
The Red Devils (5-4 overall, 2-1 area) jumped out early on the Rebels (2-16, 0-5) in the first period, but the Rebels battled back to close out the period with a 15-11 lead.
Markeshia Bailey and Amber Uptain led a Maplesville surge in the second period and took a 29-22 lead to the locker room for the halftime break.
It was all Devils in the second half as they would hold the Rebels to just five third-period points while building a 21-point lead at the end of the third period.
Maplesville had three players in double digits in points scored: Uptain with 18 points, seven steals and four rebounds; Kiana Andrews with 17 points, six rebounds, four steals and two blocks; and Bailey with 15 points, 12 rebounds and one block.
Sabrina Ellison led the way for Thorsby with 11 points, five rebounds, three blocks and a steal.
No. 3 seed Maplesville advances to Round 2 on Friday night, when they will face the second-seeded and defending county champion Verbena Red Devils at 5:30 p.m.
VHS last season won the first girls county title in school history.
On Tuesday, No. 4 seed Jemison will take on No. 5 seed Chilton County High School at 5:30 p.m. The winner of that game will face No. 1 seed Isabella at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
The winners of the games Thursday and Friday will play in the championship game at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
