Every Independence Day, law enforcement officials expect a spike in traffic accidents and even roadway fatalities. This year, from Friday, July 1 through Monday, July 4, state troopers investigated nine fatal crashes resulting in nine traffic deaths.

The accidents occurred in the counties of Baldwin, Wilcox, Houston, Dallas, St. Clair, Talladega, Limestone, and two in Jefferson. State troopers estimated that alcohol was a factor in the majority of these crashes, and more than half of the individuals killed were not wearing seat belts.

But Chilton County remained relatively free of problems, according to police.

In fact, “quiet” was the most used term by local authorities to describe the weekend.

The Clanton Police Department saw the most action over the weekend, posting 34 citations, one DUI and one public intoxication violation. There were nine total traffic accidents but only one minor injury.

“We had fewer wrecks this year than last year,” said Chief Brian Stilwell. “It was pretty quiet.”

All that was reported in Jemison were a few noise complaints, according to Chief Shane Fulmer.

“Actually, we were unusually quiet,” he said. “Just an ordinary weekend for us.”

Maplesville reported one DUI, one violation of prohibition law, and one public intoxication.

“It was kind of quiet,” said Chief Todd Ingram. “But I liked it.”

Thorsby had no major reports, aside from firework complaints.

“It was pretty quiet,” said Chief Rodney Barnett. “I think everybody was gone. I was on a stay-cation, and they were on a vacation.”
