Maplesville High helps town with relief

Noah and Hannah Chambers, two Maplesville Elementary students, challenge students to donate water to help tornado victims in Hackleburg.

Maplesville High School’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) came together to collect donations for victims of the April 27 tornadoes, and volunteered to deliver the items to Hackleburg.

The group chose Hackleburg because the town was so similar to the small town atmosphere of Maplesville.

All three of Hackleburg’s schools were destroyed—elementary, middle and high. Items are still needed in the storm-damaged areas. The communities are specifically asking for laundry detergent and personal care items.

After contacting the baseball coach at Hackleburg High School, Maplesville coach Brent Hubbert challenged the FCA to donate clothes, canned goods, personal hygiene items and water to the storm-ravaged town. Dixie Plant Farm provided trucks, and 30 students and faculty traveled to Hackleburg on May 6.

While there, the students worked at a FEMA distribution center and traveled to Hamilton to work at another distribution center there.

Hannah and Noah Chambers, two Maplesville elementary students, have challenged their classmates and high school students to donate bottles of water. The collection will continue through May 20. Donations can be dropped off at Maplesville High School during business hours.

Students volunteering for Hackleburg included: Courtney Killingsworth, Lauren Niswander, Keshia Bailey, Ebony Childers, Demetrius Parker, Brandon Morrow, Natalie Arnold, Kiana Andrews, Casey Atchison, Forrest Stewart, Cameron Andrews, Brittian Hill, Keith Shields, Devonte Morrow, Anthony Johnson, Chase Girlie, Neal Ousley, Garrett Hooker, Josh Jones, Kelvin Hall, Dustin Stephens, Casey Cook and Robert Morrison.
