Zion Ridge Church to hold “Color Run”

KidZone Ministries at Zion Ridge Church of God is hosting a 5K Color Run on Aug. 29.

KidZone Ministries at Zion Ridge Church of God is hosting a 5K Color Run on Aug. 29.

The “Color the Ridge” 5K Run/Walk will be held Aug. 29 to benefit KidZone Ministries at Zion Ridge Church of God.

The second annual event is open to anyone and will feature an official 5K clock for runners.

“Last year, we had several people train for the event and had some really good runners,” event organizer Holly Porter said. “We also have families that walk together.

“People have the option of running or walking. Either way, it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Porter said those participating should wear white shirts, as they will be sprayed with a mixture of temporary paint and water before the race begins, as part of the color theme.

“We’re going to put the color in fire extinguishers and spray it on the runners before they begin,” Porter said. “The Clanton Fire Department will also be helping by misting the paint mixture onto the runners at certain points throughout the race.”

All participants will receive a T-shirt at the event.

Porter said the event yielded approximately 30 participants last year, and event planners are hoping for an even larger turnout for this year’s run.

“We will have scriptures along the route to motivate people, and healthy snacks and drinks will be provided,” Porter said.

Medals will be presented to the first, second, and third place finishers.

The route will begin in the empty lot beside Chilton Medical Center, weaving through Pinedale Road, Wyatt Road, Moates Drive, and ending on Medical Center Drive.

Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. beside Chilton Medical Center, and the run will begin at 8 a.m.

All proceeds from the event will help students with the KidZone Ministries fund their annual trip to Gatlinburg, Tenn. in May.

“Last year, we had 56 kids attend the trip, so this event really helps out with expenses,” Porter said.

This year’s event will be better suited for participants, Porter said, because the route is almost entirely shaded from the sun.

There will also be a Polaris off-road ATV on site in case anyone is unable to finish the race and needs to be picked up.

“It is an official 5K run, but it’s very relaxed,” Porter said. “It’s not so big of a run that it’s impossible to run if you haven’t trained. And many people just walk the route and have fun.

“It’s a run for all ages.”

Registration is $25 per person if postmarked by Saturday, and $35 after the early registration date.

Registration forms can be requested by emailing adamjc2510@gmail.com, or by signing up at the race.
