Three locals sign with West Alabama
The University of West Alabama football team will have a Chilton County flavor this fall.
Three county players signed National Letters of Intent on Wednesday to take their talents to Livingston.
Jemison receiver Eddie Hubbard and running back Javae Swindle held a joint ceremony Wednesday morning, and then Chilton County High School defensive end Dyquan Floyd signed with the Tigers later in the afternoon on what is known as National Signing Day, the first day high school football players can sign letters to play at the college of their choice.
Floyd said he was attracted to the atmosphere at UWA, where he paid a visit last week.
“They seemed friendly and made it feel like I was at home,” he said.
Floyd was joined at his ceremony by several relatives and a large group of CCHS students.
“It’s a really good feeling to know a school at the next level wants you to come to their school,” he told those in attendance. “If you all want to play next level ball, the opportunity is out there.”
Floyd’s team has a longstanding rivalry with Hubbard’s and Swindle’s Panthers, but don’t expect that to cause a problem. Floyd said he “grew up with” the Jemison duo and is excited about playing with them instead of against them.
Though Wednesday was the first day players could sign to play for a college, they still have plenty of time to do so after today. Other local players may sign at a later date.
