Baseball season underway

High school baseball season began Monday, and local teams wasted no time taking to the cold, wet fields.

Chilton County High School defeated Chelsea, 10-5, on Monday and beat Calera, 18-1, on Tuesday even though the Tigers were without one of their best hitters in catcher Craig Headley, who was injured in practice and likely won’t return until next week.

And the pitch: Jemison’s Danny Eslinger delivers a pitch during Tuesday’s game against Marbury.

JD Minor was 4-for-5 at the plate against Chelsea and went 2-for-3 against Calera.

Beau Wade was 2-for-3 against Chelsea and 3-for-4 against Calera.

Blake Teel, Tyler Maddox, Cameron Cummings, JP Ratliff and Evan Moatts have all been effective in their appearances on the mound.

Isabella fell to Maplesville, 14-7 on Monday, though IHS led 6-4 in the sixth inning.

Maplesville’s Trevor Wallace went 4-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored, Colby Chambers went 3-for-5 with two runs batted in and both Fuqua Seales and Brett Walker went 3-for-4 with a run scored.

Isabella starting pitcher Travis Williams left the game with the Mustangs leading, and Andrew Smith recorded a two-run double.

IHS also fell to Billingsley, 5-3 on Tuesday despite a strong performance from starting pitcher Jacob Carroll.

Billingsley defeated Verbena, 10-6, on Monday.

MHS led West Blocton 5-1 with two outs in the seventh inning on Tuesday but allowed Blocton to tie the game in the seventh, thanks in part to two errors, and win it in the eighth, 6-5.

Trent Smitherman went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI in that game, and Zach Bush went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Jemison lost to Marbury on Tuesday, 9-5, though the Panthers started their season with wins Monday over LAMP (12-7) and Montgomery Academy (12-7).

Thorsby opened its 2013 campaign with a 23-4 win over Dallas County on Monday.

Matt Morgan hit two home runs in the romp, and Brantly Maddox earned the win on the mound.

Editor’s note: Look for The Clanton Advertiser’s baseball preview to be posted Friday.
