Ivey urges hope in Easter message

Easter is a time to celebrate life for many Christian denominations, but this year the holiday falls on April 12 in the midst of coronavirus pandemic.

Gov. Kay Ivey touched on the situation during an Easter-centric message to the state of Alabama April 10, which also happened to be “Good Friday,” a day in which several churches pay tribute to the account of Jesus’s crucifixion.

“As we enter the most holy time of our faith, I know it is easy to be discouraged with everything that is happening in our world right now,” Ivey said.

Ivey pointed to the story of Jesus as one that can be used to provide hope and inspiration during the current trying times.

While looking back at past events that took place during Biblical times, she wound up linking them with a future outlook.

“Friends, Jesus’s death on the cross is the promise that Christ will make all things new, and he can work all things for His good,” Ivey said. “I know this Easter isn’t what we are used to. This too shall pass.”

The fact that togetherness can be achieved even while six feet apart was the consistent message throughout the speech.

“We know we need to abide by these social distancing guidelines for the benefit of us all, but it has made many feel isolated and lonely,” Ivey said.

“As you join others in faith this Sunday through your electronic devices, let us give thanks to the Lord for his blessings on our lives and remember each other in prayer. May God bless you and the great state of Alabama.”
