Clanton to refinance Conference Center bond

The city of Clanton will save about $3 million by refinancing its bond used for the construction of the Clanton Conference and Performing Arts Center.

The center, a project costing about $12 million, opened in 2010 adjacent to Jefferson State Community College Clanton Campus.

Originally obligated for 16 more years, through 2032, the refinancing through Piper Jaffray will allow the city to pay off the debt by 2027.

The Council voted unanimously to approve the refinancing.

In other business, the Council:

•Appointed City Clerk Debbie Orange as election manager for the upcoming municipal election in August.

•Approved a three-year agreement with RDS, which collects various taxes for the city.

•Approved the resignation of Zachary Headley from the sanitation department, effective June 23.

•Heard from a resident that Goose Pond Park was in need of maintenance. The resident said bushes at the park are overgrown and limit sight, among other issues. Councilman Greg DeJarnett said some of the issues mentioned about Goose Pond Park are also problems at E.M. Henry Park.

•Heard from a representative of the Chilton County Chamber of Commerce, who thanked city officials for their help with and support of the annual Peach Jam, which was held June 24 at Clanton City Park.

•Approved minutes from the June 13 meeting.

•Approved paying necessary bills.
