Church group to give away free water

A group of young girls from a Clanton church will be helping people beat the heat this Saturday.

The GAs, or Girls in Action, from Poplar Springs Baptist Church plan to hand out 500 bottles of cold water in the parking lot of Clanton’s Walmart Supercenter beginning at 9 a.m.

GAs director Cindy Stollenwerck said it’s just another way of reaching out to the community.

“We just want people to know our church is there if anybody needs anything,” she said.

The group, which has about 30 participants ranging in age from kindergarten through sixth grade, does an organized community project each month. Other projects have included a homeless mission, soup kitchen and a puppet show for patients at Children’s Hospital in Birmingham.

Next month, the girls plan to visit an area assisted living facility and perform manicures for the residents.

Stollenwerck indicated it’s all about exposing the girls to the importance of helping meet people’s needs.

“Our entire church supports what we do,” she said. “GAs is all about missions. I want the girls to experience getting out there and telling people about Jesus.”

Poplar Springs, located off the road of the same name, also has a food pantry to assist those who are less fortunate. They host numerous children’s programs, Stollenwerck added. The church’s pastor is Bro. Ken Brand.
