CCHS Gridiron Club celebrates first year

It’s been one year since the Chilton County High School Gridiron Club formed, and according to club president Chris Speaks, it has been relatively smooth sailing.

“It’s gone really well,” he said. “Last year, we had probably 40 signed up, and we have 25-30 signed up right now. We’ll have more once the season starts.”

While many high school programs across the country struggle with booster clubs interfering with what takes place on the field, Speaks said the CCHS club’s goal is simple: help the team but be as hands off as possible.

“Our basic goal is to raise money to assist the football team,” he said. “[Right now], we’re raising money to expand and renovate the field house. We want to reconfigure it, and add a new section that’ll be a weight room.”

Speaks also said that funding came from activities within the community, in addition to advertising in the game programs and parking.

“We did a car wash a few weeks ago, and other things such as that,” he said. “We’re trying to do a lot to the field with upkeep and maintenance. We’re also trying to get new lights before the season.”

The next meeting for the club will be Aug. 1 at 6 p.m. in the CCHS field house, and will have a workday Aug. 6. For more information, contact Speaks at 755-3440.
