Rebels roll at Verbena to start season

Though it wasn’t a region game, Thorsby coach Billy Jackson knows his team’s season-opening 34-19 win at Verbena was important.

“That’s going to give us momentum to start this next week in area play,” Jackson said. “I’m pleased with the way they approached tonight. They played really, really hard, and you can’t ask for more than that.”

Much like the Rebels hope Friday’s win is a positive start to a successful season, the first play against VHS was a great start to the game for Thorsby.

After a reverse, the ball was pitched back to quarterback Darius Davis, who found a wide open Cameron Castleberry for a 70-yard touchdown.

David Combs was good on the point-after try, as he was for every Rebels score on the night.

Davis runs of 28 yards and 20 yards gave Thorsby a 21-0 lead at halftime.

Verbena scored its first touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter, on a 38-yard run by Dorrian Parker, but Thorsby answered right back with a 39-yard scamper by Davis.

With just under 5 minutes remaining in the game, Parker scored again for Verbena to make the score 27-13.

Donnie Hoffman put the game away for Thorsby with a 1-yard run with less than 2 minutes left to play, but Verbena wouldn’t quit, scoring on a 25-yard pass from Tristan Short to Christian Agee.
