Commission to record meetings

Chilton County Commissioner Jimmie Hardee proposed a resolution to start recording Commission meetings during the meeting on Sept. 10.

“Our goal is to make this transparent to the public,” Hardee said.

The resolution passed with Chairman Allen Caton as the lone opposition.

According to Caton, he did not feel that it would be a good move for the commission, and that it could present more problems than benefits.

Under the approved resolution, only commission meetings will be recorded at this time and not work sessions.

The recordings will not be a live feed, but instead will be posted on the website in the days following the meeting.

The first recording will be officially posted after the first Commission meeting of 2019.

A trial run of the recording process is scheduled to begin in the next couple of weeks to allow for some time to get familiar with the system and allow time to work out any kinks that may pop up.

The Commission also did its annual bid opening for the 2018-19 fiscal year.

There were several bids received and accepted from companies offering their services.

The bids will be compared, and a future decision will be made about which company to go with.

Six services had just one bid placed. Those bids will be open for negotiation.

In other news from the meeting:

  • County Engineer Tony Wearren was granted permission to enter into a three-year lease with SunSouth for three John Deere tractors. According to the Commission, the tractors are on the state bid list and are local.
  • A road department line item transfer of $14,440 to R&M construction equipment was approved.
  • Wearren was granted permission to advertise and hire a new truck driver, due to a truck driver leaving at the end of the month.
  • The Commission approved the rollover of money into next year’s appraisal budget.
  • A resolution was passed to amend Minooka Park’s budget to move $14,000 from equipment to miscellaneous motor vehicle.
  • The County’s 2018-19 holidays were approved. They mimic the list of state holidays.
  • County attorney Fletcher Green called an executive session to end the meeting to discuss pending litigation.
  • The Commission approved the minutes from the Aug. 27 meeting.
  • The Commission approved to pay its bills.
