Ashmore Church sings to repair roof

Ashmore Memorial Church in Jemison has been home to gospel music for quite some time, and now it is using the gift of song to raise money for roof repairs.

Prior to becoming a church in the early 1990s, the building was a singing center since 1979.

The tradition of local talent using their vocal cords to send God’s message continues to this day with a musical performance scheduled to take place at least once a month.

According to Bevie Ashmore, whose family the building is named after, has made sure that the musical tradition has maintained intact throughout the years.

She is 92 years old and continues to be an active part in making sure that the building’s musical roots continue to echo.

“Good gospel music is truly a blessing,” Ashmore said. “The lord has just continued to bless us over the years.”

This month’s performance will also serve as a fundraiser to help with some much-needed repairs to the roof, with the most important portion being located over the section of the church where Sunday School is taught.

“We got the inside sanctuary all fixed up, but then the roof started to leak,” Ashmore said. “It’s necessary to get it fixed soon because once the rain gets inside, then you’ve got double trouble.”

New artists are being added to the list of performers with each passing day, but will include Percy Scott, Haven-Heirs, Joymasters, The Lowery’s, Samaritan’s, Ray and Rhonda Headley and many more.

“We try to sing up there at least once a year,” said performer Rhonda Headley. “They are just precious people and if we can help them anyway that we can, we will do so.”

The benefit will begin at 6 p.m. in the church. The public is welcome and donations will be greatly appreciated by everyone who attends.
