Donny Martin Day set for Sunday

Donny Martin Day, a annual blood drive that recognizes one of Chilton County’s most dedicated donors, will be Sunday, Jan. 16.

The blood drive will be held at West End Baptist Church from noon until 5 p.m.

According to those involved with the drive, it couldn’t have come at a better time.

“The need for blood is very great,” said Red Cross Account Manager Helen Carroll. “It would be a wonderful opportunity to give.”

The recent winter weather caused the Red Cross to miss collecting close to 500 units of blood from the Alabama region alone. Normally, 600 units are collected per day.

Event coordinator Christy Hood said that while the drive is a yearly occurrence, the shortage of blood added extra emphasis to this year’s drive.

“The Red Cross has had to cancel so many drives recently, we need [people] to come out and give,” she said.

Hood also said she hopes others follow Donny Martin’s example when it comes to helping out.

“He gives every time he can. We encourage others to give like he does,” Hood said.

Red Cross Communications Manager Evan Duffy said that if more gave like Martin, shortages would be a thing of the past.

Through the years, Martin has donated upwards of 20 gallons of blood, first giving blood more than 50 years ago, in November 1957.

“If people gave two times a year, [we’d] never have a blood shortage,” said Duffy. “Donors like Donny Martin are at the very heart of the Red Cross. Countless patients have had extra time with their families because of donors like him.”

The drive will take place in the church’s old fellowship hall. Donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh 110 pounds, and be in relatively good health. They must also bring a valid photo ID or donor card and should be well hydrated.

To schedule an appointment, sign up at the church or go online to redcrossblood.org and select Donny Martin Day.
