Students can do things in classrooms today that their grandparents never would have thought possible.

A class being taught at Vestavia Hills can be streamed to a schoolroom in Verbena, allowing students opportunities they never had before.

It’s no surprise, then, that today’s students are more technology savvy than their counterparts from yesteryear. They all know what Facebook is—but might not realize the dangers posed by sharing information through such a site.

Thankfully, the Chilton County Board of Education is helping our children avoid the dangers of the Internet. The board has an Internet Safety Policy, and a public meeting to discuss the policy was held recently. We hope that meeting was productive because the role of technology in the classroom will only grow in the coming years.

The board is also prepared to handle this trend through chiltonschools.org, a site that allows teachers to upload lesson plans that can then be viewed by students in the class.

Computers and the Internet will only become more a part of the modern classroom. We hope Chilton County will be ready.
