Habitat for Humanity of Chilton and Autauga counties will hold an application fair for a home Thursday, Feb. 2 at 6 p.m. at the Department of Human Resources office in Clanton.

“We actually had this application fair planned prior to the tornado hitting,” Habitat board member Kelly Nice said.

Applicants must arrive no later than 6:10 p.m. with valid photo I.D., documentation to prove legal status in U.S., proof of all income and monthly bills, contact information for three references (cannot be related to applicant) and a Social Security card for all family members.

Habitat chooses families based on need, ability to pay and willingness to partner.

To qualify for Habitat housing, applicants must have lived or worked in Chilton County for at least the past nine months; demonstrate a need for new housing based on income and current housing conditions; must be able to pay for new housing; must be willing to be a Habitat partner family; must not have had drug convictions; and must not have been convicted of a sexual offense.

Habitat partner families are selected based on willingness to earn up to 400 hours of sweat equity by building on others’ homes and their home, along with completing homeowner education classes.

Habitat follows the Housing and Urban Development income guidelines, and people who earn 30-60 percent of the average median income for Chilton County may qualify for housing.
