Maplesville junior linebacker Cameron Andrews can add another honor to what is a growing list of them.

Andrews will be named 1A Defensive Player FOX6 Sideline All-Star.

“The FOX6 Sideline staff scoured the statistics posted each week by AHSAA and local media to find the best offensive and defensive athletes in each division of Class 1A to 6A in Central Alabama,” reads the letter received by Andrews.

Andrews will be recognized at a banquet on Jan. 24 at the Birmingham Marriott.

“We had no idea,” Maplesville Principal Maggie Hicks said. “He’s very deserving. He’s a humble person. He doesn’t want accolades.”

Coach Brent Hubbert said Andrews may be the best linebacker in the state 1A classification.

“He plays our defensive quarterback,” Hubbert said about the middle linebacker position that requires Andrews to relay calls from the sidelines and make sure everyone is clear on their assignments on any given play. “He’s got to know our opponent better than anybody. He’s an excellent choice for this award.”

Andrews said he relishes his role on the team.

“They expect me to be a leader,” he said. “The fact that my teammates and coaches have the faith in me to do it, that feels good.”

Andrews led Maplesville with 120 tackles in 13 games. His total was second among all players in the Chilton County area.

Andrews was named to The Clanton Advertiser’s All-Area Football Team on Dec. 25, 2011.
