Another piece of the puzzle fell into place for 16-year-old Karli Chadwick on Nov. 3 when she received her second kidney transplant, a giant step forward in her ongoing treatment.

Chadwick was diagnosed with end-stage renal disease after contracting hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) at age 2. Her first kidney transplant was successful until a virus that she caught nine years later caused her new kidney to fail.

Chadwick is now in the recovery phase of her second transplant, but HUS requires that she take doses of an expensive drug to combat the condition, which results from the abnormal premature destruction of red blood cells.

To help offset her medical expenses, friends and supporters have organized the Karli’s Angels Pageant on Jan. 28 at 3 p.m. at the Jemison Municipal Auditorium.

All proceeds from the pageant will go to Chadwick and her family.

“It’s a 100-percent, total fundraising beyond paying for the trophies and the crowns,” said Tonya Hall of Alabama Pageants. “Beyond that, everything will go to the Chadwicks.”

Special guest emcee and vocal performer will be Erica Leonardi Clark, who has competed in the Miss Alabama Pageant and held titles including Miss UAB, Miss Springville and Miss Talladega County.

Guest judges will be Miss Alabama contestants and volunteers.

Admission is $5 for ages 4 and up, and children under 4 are free. One female adult will be admitted free with any contestant.

The deadline to enter as a contestant is Jan. 18. Entry forms are available on Facebook on the event page labeled “Karli’s Angels Pageant.”

Hall said Just A Dream Pageant Wear located in the Sardis community will give a 50-percent discount on dress rentals for Karli’s Angels Pageant only.

Pageant wear is encouraged but not required.
