Former Jemison star Stevie Martin signed a full scholarship to play softball with Bevill State Community College.
Bevill State was 41-18 overall last season and finished second in their conference. Bevill State plays in ACCC Division 1 softball.
Coach Ricky Howell said he has signed a strong freshman class with players from Hueytown, Clay-Chalkville, Mortimer Jordan and other top softball programs.
Martin received offers from several colleges in softball and volleyball, but, after trying out for Bevill and meeting Howell, she knew Bevill was where she wanted to play.
“I really like Coach Howell and his staff,” Martin said. “Coach Howell is competitive and works his players hard. He likes to win.
“He is also very approachable and will be there for his players. That is the kind of coach I want to play for. I am very excited and thankful for the opportunity.”
Martin is also a direct descendent of Thomas Bevill, who the college is named for. Bevill will play a tough fall schedule, which includes the likes of Auburn and other four-year colleges, to prepare for the spring season.
“Stevie is a great athlete and is dedicated to being the best she can be,” Howell said. “By playing summer travel ball, it exemplifies this because she devotes a lot of time and effort, whereas she could spend that time on other options.
“Stevie has the attributes I look for in a student/athlete: intelligence, character and ability. She will be an integral part of Bevill State’s softball program, and hopefully I can help her academically, athletically and spiritually.”
