The Thorsby Town Council has granted a variance to Jimmy Easterling to build a sign for his storage business in town.

Easterling approached the council about putting a sign up at his business. When the council was looking into the issue, they found out that a building a sign on Easterling’s property would be a violation of the zoning ordinance.

The town, however, had not enforced the ordinance when another storage business in town was allowed to build a sign similar to Easterling’s proposed sign.

Because of that, the town’s variance board recently granted a variance for the sign to Easterling, and the council followed suit on Monday night.

“We’ve granted this variance to the zoning ordinance this time, but we are going to enforce the ordinance from now on,” Bentley said.

In other business, the council:

approved the purchase of a demo sewer camera for the water department.

purchased two new computer workstations and a scanner.

paid its quarterly fee to the Chilton County Humane Society.

approved resolutions to automatically re-elect Neil Benson (Place 1), Jean Nelson (Place 2) and Willis Britt (Place 3) to the council for four more years because they were unopposed.

adopted the town’s previously-used voting machines for the municipal elections.

appointed election officers for the municipal election. They are inspector – Shelby Dowda; registration list clerk – Nelda Headley; poll list clerk – Melba Davis and ballot clerk – Donny Bean. The municipal election will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 26.

appointed clerk Denise Gunn as the absentee election manager and voted to pay her $50 a day for each day an absentee ballot is handled.
