The Town of Maplesville enjoyed their second year of Story Hour with the local children. Every Tuesday during the month of July, the Maplesville Library was host to a room full of kids as well as a special guest reader.

This year the average attendance for Story Hour was 55 children, giving the library a much bigger audience than they had last year.

“We really had a lot of kids come into the library, and they all seemed to enjoy the guest readers that came in to read during the hour,” said Sheila Haigler, town clerk and head librarian.

To keep kids involved with community members, the Maplesville Library had a local guest come in a read to the kids. As a kick off on July 1, resident Rita Little led the kids in a parade down Main Street to visit senior citizens at the Maplesville Train Depot, which houses the town’s senior center. There they watched the movie “A Bug’s Life” to follow with the Story Hour theme “Catch the Reading Bug.”

The kids were also given the chance to take part in a coloring contest. The color pictures were placed in the library, and the mayor and Town Council were the judges. The winners were Morgan Short from group one, Sable McElroy from group two, and Cole Riley from group three.

During the program, the kids did many crafts and activities such as create their own storybooks, make butterflies, decorate cupcakes and eat fun foods like web-shaped pretzels.

“To end the Story Hour month this year, we had a celebration where the kids enjoyed hotdogs and chips,” Haigler said. “We really appreciate everyone that came out and helped this year, and we welcome any volunteers to come out and help with the library and encourage both young and old to read.”
