More than 100 students have signed up to take classes this fall at Jefferson State Community College’s Clanton campus.

Mike Hobbs, enrollment director for Jeff State, said that’s a pretty good number for this being the first semester.

“We’ve had more than 50 people stop by [yesterday], and at least 30 of them registered for classes,” Hobbs said during a registration in Clanton yesterday. “We started today with 81 students already enrolled. That’s a great beginning.”

Classes will begin for Jeff State Monday at the old McKinnon Toyota building on Highway 31 in Clanton. While it isn’t the typical setting for classes, Hobbs said they will have classes here until the building is completed around in early October.

The class schedule at the building feature two sessions. A day class session will begin around 8:30 a.m. and finish up around 2:25 p.m. The night session begins at 5 and concludes at 9:30.

Some of the subjects being taught right now include art, business, economics, English, history, math, music, psychology, religion, sociology, Spanish and speech. There will also be a mini-term with biology and computer and information sciences.

“The reason why we won’t start those classes just now is because they require a lab,” Hobbs said. “They are finishing up the laboratories right now.”

As soon as the new building is completed, construction will begin on the civic center.
