ISABELLA – There were some tense moments, but Isabella defeated Marbury in the last match of the day to clinch the Isabella Invitational tournament and remain unbeaten on the year.
The Class 2A No. 7 Mustangs (11-0, a school best start) defeated both LAMP and Thorsby before the match-up with Marbury.
Before the tournament, the Bulldogs were the only team to have taken a game from Isabella this season, and they did it again on Saturday.
Marbury took Game 1 26-24 after trailing 18-23. The Mustangs came back with a vengeance, though, with a 25-6 win in Game 2 and a 15-5 decision in Game 3.
A Marbury win would have forced a three-way tie for first place in the tournament, but it was not to be.
Krysta Tyler led the way for Isabella with 40 assists and eight aces in the three matches. Amber Wyatt (26) and Carissa Eiland (25) combined for 51 kills. Wyatt also had eight blocks, and Eiland added five.
Thorsby couldn’t get a win in three matches on the day, though the Rebels led in both games of their last match, against LAMP.
Brittany Maddox paced the Thorsby attack with 11 kills and six digs. Stephanie Moore had 12 kills, and Holly Smith added 12 assists and three aces.
