THORSBY – One hundred and twenty-one girls have registered for the annual Miss Swedish Fest Pageant.
Girls from ages 0-19 will compete for titles in seven categories Monday night at Thorsby High School’s auditorium, and the anticipation is high.
“One thing we are excited about this time is our Miss group,” Swedish Fest Committee chair Tracia Bussey said. “We have expanded the age range to 19, and the winner of the group will receive a $1,000 scholarship to the college of her choice.”
Sixteen girls between the ages of 16 and 19 are competing for the Miss Swedish Fest crown. The other categories are as follows: Junior Miss (13-15), Young Miss (11-12), Little Miss (8-10), Tiny Miss (5-7), Tiniest Miss (3-4) and Baby Miss (0-2).
There are also photogenic titles in each category.
The pageant is 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6 at the school’s auditorium. Admission is $3 at the door for adults and $2 for students.
All winners will ride in the Swedish Festival Parade on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 9 a.m. in Thorsby’s town center and at Richard Wood Park.
Bussey also announced updates for this year’s Swedish Fest. The grand marshal for the parade will be Steve Vassallo, president of the Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce’s South-Central U.S. division, headquartered in Madison, Miss.
Also, the entertainment lineup will include a special appearance by Norwegian country singer and recording artist O.J. Hanssen at 12:30 p.m.
For those who want to catch all the fun, opening ceremonies begin immediately after the parade in Richard Wood Park at 10. Entertainment, food, and booths will continue until mid-afternoon.
