With the results of Tuesday’s run-offs, Chilton County now has two new mayors and eight new councilmembers.

If you’re scoring at home, 10 of the 24 elected municipal positions in this county feature a new face. That’s a significant transition.

The residents of Clanton, Jemison, Maplesville and Thorsby will all have, at the least, one new councilmember.

It seems these residents have decided changes are needed.

That decision doesn’t have to mean the tenures of the mayors or councilmembers that are being replaced were not beneficial or appreciated.

Sometimes, elections simply turn on a perception that new ideas are needed.

We congratulate the winners of Tuesday’s run-offs: Dearl Hilyer in the race for mayor of Thorsby, Jeffrey Price in Clanton’s Ward 1 and William Trimble in Clanton’s Ward 4. It was a good race for all the candidates, and we thank them for keeping the election as clean as possible.

We also thank the people these winners will replace for their service to the towns they represented.

The next logical step for the voters of Chilton County is to look to the future.

We must all realize there will be new mayors working with old, for lack of a better term, councilmembers or new councilmembers working with old mayors all over the county. It will take time for these leaders to learn how to work with each other.

We’ll have to wait and see what kind of job our new officials will do, but one thing is for sure: the leadership of our towns looks much different.
