The Chilton County Commission on Monday approved the final three locations as part of a plan to install 13 new storm shelters in the county.

Five storm shelters were located in Chilton County before the commission voted to install one at every fire department in the county.

But North Chilton and South Chilton fire departments did not have adequate space for a shelter. Instead, shelters will be located at the Stanton Civic Center and in the Providence community on private property, which will be leased to the county for 30 years.

The commission also approved placing a shelter at Higgins Ferry Park.

Chilton County Emergency Management Agency Director Bill Collum said the planned shelters will give county residents every possible opportunity to keep themselves safe during severe weather.

“We can’t stop the weather; we can just give people a chance to protect themselves,” Collum said.

In other business, the commission:

•Approved bids related to the Road Department. County engineer Tony Wearren recommended the following bids, which were approved by the commission: Wiregrass for plant mix, Hunt Refining for liquid asphalt, Thomas Oil for diesel fuel, Highway Management for striping, ACME for pipe, Tri-State for treated lumber and Traffic Signs for signs. No bids were received for gasoline for the department, so the commission voted to request bids again.

•Approved a bid by Wilson Oil for gasoline for the Sheriff’s Department.

•Appointed Sue McKinney to the Chilton-Clanton Public Library Board, at the request of the board.

•Approved changing Sheriff’s Office employee James Mark Johnson from part-time to full-time. Johnson will replace a full-time employee who left the department.
