Chilton County High School senior Leigh Anna Shavers’ family had lots of questions when her grandmother was diagnosed with cancer in 2007.
Those questions led her to produce a pamphlet this summer for other families in similar situations.
Shavers recently completed the publication and distributed 500 copies to local hospitals, clinics and doctor offices. She dedicated the leadership project to her grandmother, the late Mary Jo Skidmore.
The pamphlet includes basic information about cancer, suggests questions for people to ask their doctor, and lists oncologist and cancer treatment centers in Central Alabama. Sources for information included the Alabama Department of Public Health and the American Cancer Society’s website, cancer.org.
Shavers said she hopes the pamphlet helps people and families dealing with cancer.
In a personal note in the pamphlet, Shavers writes, in part, “When my MeMe was diagnosed with cancer in November 2007, my family was lost and seeking as much information as possible … Clearly, there are many more families in Chilton County who can benefit from the information my family learned as we struggled through the final two years of my MeMe’s life. Today, through this pamphlet, I share this information with you in hopes that you will have some useful information when needed, and I pray for each family as they continue along the journey of a life with cancer.”
Shavers is daughter of Jeff and Alfredia Shavers. She is the granddaughter of the late Alfred H. Cleckley, the late Mary Jo Skidmore, Virginia Ann Shavers and the late David L. Shavers.
Shavers has a 4.0 GPA at Chilton County High School and is at the top of her class. She is also involved in the National Honor Society, National Beta Club, Student Government Association, Chilton County Juniorettes as well as the Science Club, Calculus Club, Spanish Club and Historical Society.
She is a varsity cheerleader, plays on the tennis team and is a member of the yearbook staff and Future Community and Career Leaders of America.
She has also done volunteer work at Chilton Medical Center and Zion Ridge Church of God, among other organizations. She was named second alternate in June’s Miss Peach Pageant.
After graduation, she plans to attend a college or university.
