What I am talking about are rainbows. I always love looking at rainbows whenever I see them. Obviously, rainbows aren’t that uncommon, but I still enjoy it when I see them.

I would gather that many people like the songs, too, especially since we have several songs written about rainbows. One is “Over the Rainbow,” which was one of my high school band director’s favorite songs. It appears in “The Wizard of Oz,” and that was one of the first movies I remember seeing.

Of course, there are Biblical references to rainbows that make it special. The main one is found in Genesis 9:16: “Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.” That was God’s covenant not to destroy the earth by water again after the flood.

I always remember the television show “Reading Rainbow” that was always a favorite when I was a kid, but you don’t have to take my word for it (Sorry, just had to say it). It was a good show to help kids get interested in reading. It was also fun because it was more than just about reading. You got to see interesting places and see how things were made. Of course, it would always refer kids back to a book to read more about it.

Although I understand the science in how rainbows are formed in the sky, it doesn’t take the wonder out of looking at them. If we had severe weather that afternoon and a rainbow appeared, I would get a calming feeling because I knew the storms were over. They would also lift my spirits, especially when I was having a bad day.
