Wendell Lewis finished with 17 points and seven rebounds to lead Selma (5-5) to a 73-52 rout of Chilton County (0-2) on Tuesday.

The Tigers kept it close early, but Selma simply proved too big and physical for Chilton County.

“We couldn’t keep them off the boards,” said Chilton County coach Donnie Hand. “The kids played hard, and they don’t quit, (but) Selma’s a good team.”

A Jasmine Wave jump shot tied the game at 11 late in the first quarter, but Selma responded with an 18-2 run sparked by a Josh Dixon 3-point play and hot shooting by Justin Ravizee and Wendell Lewis to take a 29-13 lead.

Nelson Williams hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to make it 34-20 at the half, but in the third quarter, the Saints picked up where they left off. A Duprie Rivers bucket led to a 9-0 run to give Selma a 43-20 advantage.

The win earned Selma its first winning streak of the season. Selma coach Woodie Jackson has seen improvement in his team, but wants to see more.

“There are still a lot of areas we’ve got to make improvements in,” said Jackson. “Overall, we’re very, very happy with the win. But we’re still not happy with the effort.”

Rivers added 13 points and seven rebounds for the Saints, and DeAngelo Norris finished with nine points and five assists.

Williams led the Tigers with 14 points and Grantland Karn had eight.

Selma girls 55, Chilton Co. 16

Selma High (11-2) made quick work of a Chilton County team that simply couldn’t keep up in a 55-16 win on Tuesday night.

“It’s our first area win,” said Selma coach Anthony Harris. “You always appreciate that one.”

From the game’s inception, it was clear that the Tigers (0-2) would have trouble with Selma, and the Saints took advantage. The Saints used a 27-2 run to extend an early 12-6 lead to 39-8 at the half. The Selma press forced several Chilton County turnovers and led to easy transition buckets for the Saints.

“We went off into a 1-3-1 press,” said Harris. “We got easy baskets. It was several steals and layup city.”

The Tigers’ few shooting opportunities didn’t pan out, either, as the ball simply did not drop. Chilton County went more than 13 minutes without a point — including the entire second quarter — before Paris Benson ended the drought with a layup halfway through the third quarter.

“We’ve got a lot of improving to do,” said Chilton County coach Misty Jones. “The press and their speed really gave us a problems.”

The majority of the Saints’ first-half run came after Keisha Moore went down with a wrist injury. Harris said she will be on the floor for Friday’s game against Demopolis, but was held out following the second quarter when the game’s outcome was no longer in doubt.

Ashley Grimes led Selma with 13 points and five rebounds. Kameisha Strong finished with 12 points, and Breanna Smith wound up with eight points.

Vernice Trimple led the Tigers with eight points.
