Another year is almost complete, and the Chilton County Relay For Life is getting closer.

The 2009 Relay For Life celebration will be held on April 24 at the Little League Football Field in Clanton City Park. The American Cancer Society is requesting that people who intend to become part of this year’s Relay register at their earliest convenience.

To make the process easier, the American Cancer Society has created a Web site that includes events, amounts raised, team names and registration forms.

“This is the best way that people can register and it is easy and quick,” said Morgan Choat, Northwest Alabama Area Director for the American Cancer Society.

All you have to do is visit the Web site at www.relayforlife.org/chilton. If you have no way of connecting to the Internet, you can also register yourself or your team by phone at (205) 930-8885.

Relay For Life is a family-oriented event where participants enjoy being part of a team while raising funds to help eliminate cancer. Participants in the relay event camp out at the site and begin their walk. When they are not taking their turn walking, they take part in fun activities and enjoy local entertainment.

Through the event, people celebrate for people who have faced cancer, remember the people who have lost their battles and keep the fight going to find a cure.

Teams from companies, churches, organizations, hospitals, and schools collect donations and can win individual and team prizes for their efforts.

“Relay For Life brings the progress against cancer to the forefront,” Relay chairperson Robert Griffin said. “Many participants are our family, friends, and neighbors who have dealt with cancer themselves. Their involvement is proof of the progress that has been not only reducing death rates, but also in the quality of life following cancer treatment.”

Chilton County is one of many areas that help to support the battle against cancer by hosting their own event every year.

“The funds raised enable us to continue our investment in the fight against cancer through research, education, advocacy, and patient services,” Griffin said. “Thanks to the generosity of our community, the money raised by participants goes directly to the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving programs.”
