The Economic Development Center in Clanton now has a new name.

The building at Jefferson State Community College will now be called the Clanton Conference and Performing Arts Center.

Officials with the city and Jeff State believe the rebranding is a better fit for the center.

An advisory committee consisting of Clanton leaders felt the former name did not tell people what the center was about, said Sandy Stevens, the building’s event coordinator, in a press release.

“They were all in agreement on renaming the EDC to the Clanton Conference and Performing Arts Center,” Stevens said. “It says where we are [Clanton] and what we do [conferences and performing arts events].”

In addition to conferences and performing arts events, Stevens said the facility was design to host trade shows, trainings, receptions, ceremonies and even movies.

In what might become a monthly event, the center is showing a film, “Yankee Doodle Dandy,” this Friday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children under 12.

“It’s a perfect venue to show movies, and if the response is good, we may just start a series of movies,” Stevens said.

In addition to a new name, the center also has a new logo — one which replaces the “O” in Clanton with a peach.

“It describes Clanton perfectly,” said Mayor Billy Joe Driver in the release.
