The Clanton Police Department was able to make an arrest following a robbery and a unique chain of events in the evening hours of Dec. 16. Officers arrested Joseph D. Driver and placed him in the Chilton County Jail following the initial investigation into the crime.

At around 8:40 p.m. on Dec. 16, CPD received a call of a possible robbery in the 400 block of Lay Dam Road in Clanton. Upon arrival, witnesses provided details about the suspect’s appearance and that he entered the store and demanded money. However, witnesses said the suspect did not present or brandish a weapon during the incident, and they reported that he was wearing gloves, a face covering, a black jacket and blue pants.

When detectives arrived at the scene, they were able to collect a video from the incident and it was reviewed by investigators. The video contained audio of the suspect making demands to the clerk while the crime occurred. While listening to the audio, multiple officers recognized the voice in the video and pinpointed Driver as the suspect immediately. Also, investigators found out that Driver returned to the scene shortly after police arrived following his robbery attempt, leading to his eventual arrest.

Driver was charged for Robbery in the third degree and placed in the Chilton County Jail. CPD says the investigation into the crime is still ongoing.
