Maplesville High School’s Nehemiah McCary is this week’s athlete of the week for Nov. 15-21 following his performance against Sweet Water High School on Nov. 15.

If there was any doubt that the freshman running back was still dealing with anything related to his late-season start due to injury or if he was still on a pitch count, those were put to bed emphatically against Sweet Water as he carried a large majority of the load offensively for the Red Devils.

McCary was a stalwart — carrying the football 34 times against Sweet Water to the tune of 152 yards rushing. McCary punched in all three touchdowns for Maplesville in their second-round win, including the game-winning score with 38 seconds left in the game to send the Red Devils to the third round of the AHSAA Class 1A State Football Playoffs. McCary’s touchdown rushes came from 18 yards out, followed by a pair of five-yard scores.

McCary will look to bolster the Maplesville offense again on Nov. 22 as they hit the road for the first time in these playoffs traveling to Millry High School with a spot in the semifinals on the line.
