Maplesville High School’s Colby Mitchell is this week’s athlete of the week for Nov. 8-14 following his performance against Florala High School on Nov. 8.

Mitchell was a stand-out performer on the Red Devils’ defense that posted four sacks and three interceptions in the 35-6 routing in their first-round playoff game. Mitchell grabbed two of the three interceptions for Maplesville — both in the first quarter. Mitchell’s first pick came off of a tip, and his second interception he returned six yards for a touchdown to break open the scoring early on in the game. He added four tackles to his defensive totals, and caught a pass on offense.

“(The defense was) all over the field (against Florala), and our defense was locked in and they were locked in all week,” Maplesville head coach Brad Abbott said.

Mitchell and the Maplesville defense now welcomes in Sweet Water High School in the second round of the AHSAA Class 1A State Football Playoffs, a rematch of last year’s second-round matchup that saw the Red Devils win 28-21 on the road.
