Thorsby High School lost a defensive battle against old region rival B.B. Comer High School on Nov. 1, 22-15 on the road. The Rebels held two leads in the game against their former region opponent in Class 2A, but a late score downed the Rebels in their regular season finale.

Comer took a 6-0 in the first quarter and held that advantage throughout the first half and into the second half. Tyler Lockhart picked off a Comer pass just after halftime, and that set up the first scoring opportunity for Thorsby. Quarterback Grayson McManus punched in a three-yard touchdown, and the extra point gave the Rebels the lead at 7-6, which they held throughout the third quarter and well into the fourth quarter.

McManus ran for 119 yards on 15 carries to lead the team, followed by Lockhart with 30 yards on seven carries.

In the final frame, the two teams alternated touchdowns with Comer scoring first to take a 14-7 lead. However, Braylon Carroll found Lucas Jackson for a 25-yard touchdown connection, and McManus’ two-point conversion run retook the lead for Thorsby 15-14. Comer shocked the Rebels with under a minute to go with a lengthy touchdown pass to take the win in the waning seconds.

Brooks Barnett led the Rebels’ defense with 13 tackles with two coming for a loss, and he added a sack and a fumble recovery. Malachi Allgood and Lockhart each contributed 12 tackles with one coming for a loss, and Allgood had a sack.

Thorsby finishes its regular season at 4-6, and will travel to T.R. Miller High School for their first-round game in the Class 3A state playoffs on Nov. 8 at 7 p.m.
