The Chilton County Master Gardeners met for their monthly meeting on Sept. 10. The program speaker was Janell Diggs from the Capital City Master Gardeners Association. Diggs holds an Advanced Master Gardener Certification in growing and cooking with herbs, however, the focus of her program on Sept. 10 was growing and cooking with microgreens. Microgreens have become popular over the last few years. You might find them on the menu in some of your favorite restaurants as a condiment on a sandwich or added into a salad. So, you might ask, “What is a microgreen?” Microgreens are a type of plant that falls between a sprout and a baby green. They are nutritious and may offer many health benefits.

Members and guests participated in a demonstration and hands-on opportunity to prepare soil, add seeds, understand the time frame for planting, light requirements, harvesting and cooking. Explore growing microgreens and how to use them.

The Alabama Cooperative Extension System website has multiple resources this time of year that are helpful in knowing details about what, how and when plants should be planted. Google www.aces.edu and search a specific topic to get answers from Alabama A&M and Auburn University. In addition, the Extension Master Gardeners program has a helpline you can call or email to ask a Master Gardener your gardening question at 1-877-252-GROW (4769).

The next Chilton County Master Gardener meeting will be on Oct. 8 at 9 am at the Clanton Community Center (305 Lay Dam Road, Clanton). The public is invited to join us and learn more about a variety of gardening topics.
