Maplesville High School made an early season statement on Sept. 6 in Class 1A Region 4 play throttling Ellwood Christian Academy 55-0. The game switched venues after it was originally scheduled to be a home game for Ellwood Christian, but it was played in Maplesville.

The home fans were treated to a great showing from the Red Devils’ defense that saw them give up just one first down the entire game and force Ellwood Christian to negative 41 yards in the game.

On offense, seven different players scored for Maplesville and they scored on each possession they had. Quarterback Pearce Yeargan was a perfect 4-for-4 passing with 51 yards and three touchdowns passes — two to Aidan Abbott and one to Jakobe Nix. The Maplesville running game was stellar as well, piling up 215 yards on just 10 carries. Roman Hall was the leading rusher with 78 yards, followed by Davarian Clark with 59. Both players got into the end zone with rushing touchdowns, and were joined by Brody Barnett, Mike Gee and Yeargan on the rushing touchdown score sheet.

“They played almost perfect,” Maplesville head coach Brad Abbott said. “No drops, no fumbles and scored every possession. We had different people score, defense played outstanding and everyone got to play. It was a team victory, and everyone contributed to the win.”

The Red Devils posted 42 points in the first half to start the running clock on the contest, leaving the rest of the game to slide by quickly in the soggy weather. Dee Elliott led the Maplesville defense with four tackles.

Maplesville (2-0) is back on the road on Sept. 13 for their next game traveling to Notasulga High School. The Class 1A Region 4 clash is scheduled for 7 p.m.
