The Clanton City Council released a community interest survey on Aug. 26 at its meeting that will gauge resident’s opinions on a possible dog park. The survey will remain open and available to residents until Sept. 20, and it includes questions that will give the city a better grasp of what the public is looking for in a dog park, or if they are looking for one at all.

“Clanton Parks and Recreation would like your feedback,” a press release from the City of Clanton said. “Community members have expressed interest in the establishment of a dog park in Clanton City Park, and we feel that input from residents and the community would be a great first step.”

The public survey is also an important part of a grant process the city is working through as they apply for grants to fund the potential dog park. Signs will be placed throughout Clanton City Park and around the city that will include a QR code on it to access the survey. The survey will also be posted on the Clanton Municipal Government Facebook page two times per week, and on their website — www.clantonal.gov.

Authorization for the council to apply for a $100,000 grant through the Alabama Forestry tree-planting grant program that was approved unanimously. The grant would award the city with the funds to plant trees at different parks within the city limits to spruce up the appearance of them.

“A $100,000 would be great because we have a lot of places where I would like to see us plant them,” Clanton Mayor Jeff Mims said. “If we can get this done, maybe we can get another one. To me, parks look better if you have trees.”

Also, during the meeting, the council:

• Approved ordinance 2024-13 unanimously, and it declared certain property owned by the City of Clanton as surplus due to it not being needed for public or municipal purposes. The land is a tiny sliver of land next to the old water tanks building.
• Approved to retain the law firm Fortune, Beard, Arnold, Graham, & Arnold, LLP as the city’s legal counsel unanimously.
• Approved a customer service renewal agreement with UniFirst for uniforms for the city unanimously.
