Chilton County area high schools will have 27 athletes representing their respective schools at the AHSAA Track and Field State Meets in Cullman and Gulf Shores from May 2-4. Athletes advanced to the state meet by placing high in their events at the AHSAA Sectional Meet at Northridge High School on April 26-27, while also meeting the state meet requirements for the event whether it is a time, jump or throw. Each event has a specific time or distance that needs to be met in order to qualify for the state meet.

Chilton County, Isabella, Maplesville, Thorsby and Billingsley high schools all will have athletes at the state meet looking to bring home gold medals for their school. CCHS will travel to Gulf Shores for the Class 4A-7A meet at Gulf Shores Sportsplex, and Isabella, Maplesville, Thorsby and Billingsley will be at Cullman High School for the Class 1A-3A meet.

 

Isabella High School

The Mustangs will send the most athletes from inside Chilton County with a county-high six making the state meet. J.R. Sosa leads the charge after taking gold in the 2A boy’s javelin final at sectionals with a 176-04.00 throw, more than 15 feet further than second place. He will be joined at the state meet by DreVon Lee, the second-place finisher in the 2A boy’s long jump at sectionals with a 20-11.00 jump. Kaeden Abbott rounded out the medalists for Isabella at the sectional meet taking bronze in the 2A boy’s discus finals with a 119-05.00 throw.

Joining the medalists in the state meet for the Mustangs are Bucky Smith after finishing fourth in the 2A boy’s discus finals with a 117-01.00 throw, Makenzi Barrett after finishing fifth in the 2A girl’s javelin finals with an 88-00.00 throw and Darus Molette after finishing eight in the 2A boy’s discus finals with a 107-02.00 throw. Molette earned his spot in the state meet by way of a wild card selection.

 

Maplesville High School

The Red Devils track team were the other in-county team with a gold medalist at the sectional meet as Will Harrison took down two events. Harrison captured gold in the 1A boy’s 800-meter and 1600-meter run finals with times of 2:16.74 and 5:21.86, respectively. Other medalists at sectionals for Maplesville included Luke Dutton in the 1A boy’s 110-meter hurdles final running a 20.06 for second place, and Ethan Rencher running a 24.75 in the 1A boy’s 200-meter dash to finish third.

Cren Thornton placed fourth in the 1A boy’s 300-meter hurdles final at sectionals with a 50.69, and Nehemiah McCary finished fifth in the 1A boy’s long jump final with a 17-04.00 jump, both advancing to the state meet in Cullman.

 

Chilton County High School

The Tigers will have four athletes at the Class 4A-7A meet in Gulf Shores, and Marcus Coleman will lead the charge as the only of the four athletes competing in multiple events. Coleman captured a bronze medal in the 6A boy’s shot put final at the sectional meet with a 48-03.50 toss. The throw set a new personal best, and it broke the old CCHS school record that was set by Coleman earlier this season. Coleman also took fifth place in the 6A boy’s discus finals with a 125-07.00 throw.

CCHS gained other athletes in the state meet by way of a wild card entry following results from other sectional meets. Jayce Parker will run the girl’s 400-meter dash at the state meet after a sixth-place finish at sectionals that saw her run a 1:01.99 in the event.

Payton Shepherd finished seventh in the 6A boy’s 300-meter hurdles finals with a 42.07, earning his spot at the state meet via a wild card selection. Destiny Martin was the final Tigers’ athlete to earn a wild card spot in the state meet in the 6A girl’s discus. Martin tossed an 89-09.00 throw in the event at sectionals that earned her a sixth-place finish.

 

Thorsby High School

Ethan Rhea will carry the banner for the Rebels at the state meet as the only qualifying Thorsby athlete advancing from the sectional meet. Rhea finished fifth in the 2A boy’s 200-meter dash final with a time of 24.20, and will compete in the event in Cullman.

 

Billingsley High School

The Bears track and field team remained one of the most prolific in Class 1A competition in 2024 as the boy’s team took home the AHSAA Class 1A Section 2 championship for the second consecutive year.

In the boy’s team, eight athletes will be competing at the state meet in either individual events or part of one of the relay teams. The Billingsley boy’s 4×400-meter relay team of Kyle Boice, Edward Dennis, Colton Lawrence and Turner Motley took gold in the 1A boy’s 4×400-meter final at sectionals. The boy’s 4×800-meter relay team of Jaime Cardenas, Caleb Cook, Caleb Hornady and Colton Lawrence also took the gold medal in the event at sectionals, sending two Bears’ relay teams to the state meet.

Those in the relay teams also took home medals in individual events at sectionals, starting with Dennis winning gold in the 1A boy’s 110-meter hurdles final with an 18.37, and gold in the 1A boy’s 300-meter hurdles final with a 46.46. Dennis also qualified for states in the 1A boy’s 400-meter dash finishing fifth in the final with a 58.48. Boice also won two gold medals at sectionals, the first in the 1A boy’s 400-meter dash final with a 57.25, and the second in the 1A boy’s long jump finals with a 19-00.75. Added a second-place finish in the 1A boy’s 300-meter hurdles final with a 48.10 to advance to state in three individual events.

Motley captured gold in the 1A boy’s javelin finals with a 136-00.00 throw, and silver in the 1A boy’s 400-meter dash final with a 57.52 to advance to states in both events. Lawrence will run at states in the 1A boy’s 800-meter run after a 2:17.23 and second-place finish, and the 1A boy’s 1600-meter run after a 5:33.66 and second-place finish at sectionals. Colby Green collected three silver medals at the sectional meet — 1A boy’s long jump with a 18-09.75 jump, 1A boy’s discus with a 93-00.00 throw and the 1A boy’s shot put with a 34-01.00 throw, advancing to state in all three events.

The Billingsley girl’s track team will send athletes to the state meet as well, starting with Caydin Hornady who won a gold medal in the 1A girl’s 800-meter run final with a 2:52.71, and the 1A girl’s javelin finals with a 98-01.00 throw. Hornady’s winning javelin throw was 23 feet further than the second-place finisher. Alana Jones was the other gold medalist for the girl’s team posting a 54.53 in the girl’s 300-meter hurdles final. She will compete in the 1A girl’s 400-meter dash final at state as well with a 1:07.49 second-place finish at sectionals.

A trio of silver medalists are advancing to states following sectionals with Amber Johnson in the 1A girl’s high jump after a 4-06.00 jump, Ariyana Motley in the 1A girl’s 100-meter dash after a 13.39 and Kayden Bland in the 1A girl’s 800-meter run with a 2:56.45.

The Bears have two girl’s relay team advancing to the state meet, with Zara Estrict, Derrica Motley, Ariyana Motley and Caydin Hornady on the 4×100-meter relay team that finished second at sectionals, and Derrica Motley, Ariyana Motley, Bland and Jones on the 4×400-meter relay team that took home gold at sectionals.
