Chilton County area high school softball teams battled the rain once again during the week of April 5-11. However, teams were able to get some games in and continue to perfect their craft heading into the home stretch before their respective area tournaments at the end of April.

Verbena High School

Verbena High School went 2-1 in the tournament at Jemison High School on April 6, starting with a 6-5 win over the host school. Lakeyn Mims and Jasmin Moates each had two RBIs, and Jaycee Quinn was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. The Red Devils followed that with a 3-1 win over Briarwood Christian School, and Quinn threw five innings of three-hit softball with one run and seven strikeouts. Kiara Ray was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Verbena’s day ended with a 13-3 loss to West Blocton High School, but Meagan Shiver and Quinn both launched a home run in the game.

Verbena carried momentum into April 8 against Dallas County High School cruising to a 13-1 win. Quinn threw a complete seven innings with two hits, one run and 19 strikeouts. She was also 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and three RBIs.

Verbena ended its week with an AHSAA Class 1A Area 6 victory over Billingsley High School 13-0. Quinn was strong in the circle again going five innings with four hits and nine strikeouts. Shiver led Verbena at the plate with three RBIs, followed by Ray with a 3-for-4 effort with two RBIs.

Maplesville High School

Maplesville High School mounted a comeback against Thorsby High School on April 8 in the final two innings. Trailing 2-1 after five innings, the Red Devils scored the game’s final six runs to win 7-3. Mollie Kayte Smith was 3-for-4 with a double and home run, and Hannah Crowe and Allie Hand were both 2-for-3 and combined for three RBIs.

Kennedy Reed threw a complete game with seven hits, three runs (one earned) and struck out seven Thorsby batters.

Chilton County High School

Chilton County High School swept the season series over AHSAA Class 6A Area 5 rival G. W. Carver High School by winning 17-0 on April 8 in three innings. Macey Pierce had three RBIs, and Lily Benson, Tyeshia Williams and Pierce each had a double. Ava Baugh struck out seven of the nine hitters she faced.

The Tigers’ week was shortened due to rain, but they were able to get in an April 11 clash with Marbury High School, which Marbury took 8-1. Pierce shined again going 3-for-4 with a double, triple and an RBI. Ishunti Brown posted a 3-for-3 effort, but the rest of the team outside of Pierce and Brown combined for just four hits.

Jemison High School

Jemison High School hosted three schools on April 6 at its field for a tournament. The Panthers found tough sledding throughout the day, starting with a 7-1 defeat to West Blocton High School as Gracie Conway’s single was the only hit of the game for Jemison. That was followed by an 8-6 loss to Briarwood Christian School as Trinity Bean shined going 3-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs. Abby Pate was 2-for-3, and Conway knocked a two-RBI double. The Panthers’ day concluded against Verbena High School, falling 6-5. Pate was 2-for-2, Alyssa Hayes had three RBIs and Hannah Popwell had two RBIs.

Jemison righted its ship on April 8 defeating in-county rival Isabella High School 13-12 posting 14 hits as a team. Bean and Pate each knocked across three runs, and Isabella Larocca was 3-for-4.

Thorsby High School

Thorsby High School’s week of action was significantly affected by rain with one game being salvaged — a 7-3 loss to Maplesville High School on April 8. After taking a 3-1 lead after the fifth inning, Maplesville scored the game’s final six runs to win. Allie Reeser was 4-for-4 at the plate with a double and RBI, Addison Wood was 2-for-3 and Makinley Turner plated a run with an RBI.

Isabella High School

Isabella High School dropped a high-scoring matchup with Jemison High School on April 8, 13-12. Trailing 13-8 after five innings, the Mustangs scored two runs in each of the last two innings to fall one run short of the comeback.

Aliyah Patterson, Anna Johnson and Kylee Till combined for a double, two triples and nine RBIs in the three-five spots in the Isabella lineup. Amelia Fjeldstad was 3-for-3 with a triple and RBI in the leadoff spot.

Billingsley High School

Billingsley High School dropped both of its games during the week of April 5-11, starting on April 5 falling 13-10 to Vincent High School. The Bears recorded 13 hits as a team and were led by Alana Jones going 4-for-4 with two doubles. Brylin Tomlin was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, and Shelby Boice contributed three RBIs.

Billingsley was handled by Verbena High School 13-0 on April 9 in an AHSAA Class 1A Area 6 clash. Tomlin was 2-for-3, and Megan Chandler, Caydin Hornady and Sadie Primm each recorded a single.
