For the last five seasons, it was almost clockwork for Isabella High School’s varsity girl’s basketball team to start their games by kicking the ball directly to the corner on their first possession. Waiting there was Lexi Higgins, and more times than not, the senior would knock down a 3-pointer to get the Mustangs started.

Higgins has been one of the best shooters in Chilton County since her varsity career began at Isabella, and she was always a major part of the opposing scouting report. Higgins’ shooting ability helped her surpass 1,000 career points in the Mustangs program.

“I am very thankful, and I never really saw myself achieving this goal,” Higgins said. “I have always tried to play hard and do what is best for my team, and all that hard work and dedication led me to achieving this.”

Head coach Jared Day said Higgins’ shooting ability opened up more options within the Mustangs’ offense when she was on the floor, and even more when she was on point, which was often. Prior to the AHSAA Class 2A Area 7 tournament championship game and the sub-regional round, Higgins was at 70 3-pointers made this season For her career, she made around 280 3-pointers, an Isabella school record.

“She is really a quiet person, but she brings leadership with how she plays,” Day said. “She is one that can get hot and light a spark within the entire team. We won a lot of games and beat a lot of good teams, and we could not have done it without her.”

Higgins time in the Mustangs’ program came to an end following the sub-regional round, but she will depart holding the school record in 3-pointers, and leaving a lasting impact that her senior class made on the program.

“My coach helped me a lot, and my family, coach and teammates always encouraged me to keep shooting even if I am off that night,” Higgins said. “(My time here) has been great, and I loved spending time with my teammates.”
