Maplesville High School posted one touchdown each quarter in route to a 26-0 win over Notasulga High School on Sept. 15. The Red Devils’ defense pitched a shutout to boost Maplesville back to .500 on the season and to a homecoming win. Late in the fourth quarter, the Red Devils’ defense stood tall at the goal line to preserve the shutout.

“Our defense played lights out last night,” Maplesville head coach Brad Abbott said. “Overall, the defense played great, but the key was our offensive line …  They played great the week before but I think they surpassed what they did last week this week. They were opening up holes.”

Abbott pinpointed Alex Thomas, RaShun McCary, Trace Payne, Truett Smith and Joe Ryan up front for Maplesville that helped pile up over 300 yards rushing in the game. Nehemiah McCary led the way accounting for over 215 of the 300 plus yards plus three touchdowns.

McCary snagged a nine-yard touchdown pass from Bradlee Padgett in the first quarter and followed it up with a 30-yard touchdown run in the second. He punched in the two-point conversion to give Maplesville a 14-0 lead at the halftime break.

Padgett added a four-yard touchdown run in the third, and McCary had his third touchdown in the fourth quarter that brought the game to its final score.

“With a young team we face another challenge this week because we get our first road game,” Abbott said. “(Calhoun) will be coming in with a lot of confidence, and so should we, so it will be a new challenge for us but something that will help us grow in the right direction.”

Maplesville (2-2) hits the road for the first time in 2023 in its next matchup on Sept. 22 traveling to Calhoun High School. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
