On Sept. 9, 2017, the Clanton Lions Club donated four benches to the City of Clanton that were placed in Clanton City Park. On exactly six years to the date, the nonprofit returned to the four benches and updated them with new signage and plaques to liven the benches.

“I went and looked at them earlier this summer and thought we could update them a little bit because of some weathering,” Brett Culpepper, current treasurer and past president of the Clanton Lions Club, said. “We decided on Sept. 9 being the six-year anniversary and rededicated them.”

The Lions Club met with former Clanton Mayor Billy Joe Driver and the city council and had conversations with them about putting benches in city park in 2017. The city already had the concrete pads put down along the path, and the Lions Club stepped up to donate the four benches that were placed on top of the pads.

The original benches were wooden benches that feature a small plaque on the front backrest that commemorate the date the Clanton Lions Club donated them. The renovations put a bright and vibrant sign completely across the front backrest on all four benches with the club’s logo and the Sept. 9, 2017 date.

“The little plaques got worn over time, so we decided to renovate (the benches) with new signage to make them look better,” Culpepper said.

Culpepper added that the Clanton Lions Club is all about community, serving and giving back. The renovation on the benches was another way in his eyes that they could give back to the city park for the community’s use.
