The Clanton City Council held its first meeting of the month on July 7 and approved five resolutions.

The city unanimously approved a resolution for a community development block grant application to the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) for the demolition of dilapidated houses and buildings in Clanton. The city has been working on clearing eye-sore buildings for the past few months, and this grant will allow them to continue working on the project.

A resolution to authorize an easement agreement with Alabama Power for property by Butterfly Bridge was approved unanimously. An easement agreement approves someone to have access to one’s commercial or residential property for a need. Alabama Power will now have access to the property to install a new power pole on the property to help power a new transformer that will be on the property.

Also, during the meeting, the council:

• Unanimously approved a $3,000 donation to the 6U Clanton All-Stars youth softball team to assist in their trip to the All-American Youth Sports World Series in Brandon, Mississippi from July 12-16.
• Approved to declare two Clanton Fire Department vehicles surplus due to mechanical issues.
• Approved the city of Clanton to participate in the state of Alabama’s 2023 Back to School Sales Tax Holiday from July 21-23.
