Chilton-Clanton Public Library will host a summer reading kick-off for the community on May 23 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Activities will be spread throughout the library and include face painting by Chilton County Relay for Life Queens, a scavenger hunt, a spin-the-wheel game which includes prizes and refreshments.
“The kick-off is an introduction to the library’s summer reading program, and to let the community know the special events we will be hosting in June,” said children’s librarian Renee Chambers.
Special events on the calendar include “Michelle Harrell’s Magical Poodles” on June 6 at 10 a.m. which will feature two poodles that perform. Central Alabama Sport Flyers will visit with model planes on June 13 at 10 a.m. (Guests will meet at the library and then walk across the street to the old Adair School property to watch the planes and drones perform. Police will assist in helping control traffic during the transition.) A magic show will be presented by Larry Darnell on June 20 at 2 p.m., and Ventriloquist Gene Cordova will visit June 27 at 2:00 p.m.
All ages are welcome to attend the summer kick-off on May 23 and the special events in June. Children that have completed pre-school through sixth grade will additionally be invited to participate in the summer reading competition. Each time a library book is checked out participants are eligible to put their name into a drawing for a $50 Walmart gift card. The competition will run from June 1-30. The drawing will be June 30 and a winner from each of the four age categories will be announced.
“I love seeing all of the children,” said Chambers. “We only see some children during the summertime because they are in school or have events they have to go to during the school year. It is great to see their faces; making friends and making new memories.”
Summer kick-off attendees are encouraged to sign-up on May 23. Library cards are free for children. All events are free and open to the public. Library cards are not necessary to attend the events.
