After Chilton County area high schools sent nearly 100 track and field athletes to the sectionals meets on April 28-29, over 20 athletes advanced from the sectionals to the state championship meets.
Billingsley High School is sending 10 athletes to the Class 1A-3A AHSAA State Championship Meet at Cullman High School on May 5-6. The Bears’ boy’s team picked up five sectional event wins including Colton Lawrence who won the 800-meter run to qualify for the state meet. The Billingsley boy’s team were crowned the Class 1A Section 2 champions with their performances at the meet.
Lawrence will also compete in the boy’s 400-meter dash at the state meet as well. Other sectional event winners were Caleb Cook in the boy’s javelin throw, Z’Londre Tyus in the boy’s shot put, the 4×400 meter relay team (E.J Dennis, Andrew Johnson, Cook and Lawrence) and the 4×800 relay team (Caleb Hornady, Cook, Johnson and Lawrence).
Isabella High School will send five athletes to join Billingsley at the Class 1A-3A State Championship Meet. This includes Jimmie Sosa who won the boy’s javelin throw at the Mustangs’ sectional meet with a 148-foot, 2-inch throw. Isabella will also take DeAsia Wilson to the state meet to compete in the girl’s high jump after a second-place finish in the sectional meet. Wilson has experience at the state meet from past years and hopes that experience can help lead the other Isabella athletes.
Maplesville High School is the final Chilton County area school that will be represented at the Class 1A-3A state meet with nine athletes competing. Will Harrison, a veteran at the state meet, will compete in both the 800-meter and 1600-meter runs. The Red Devils have three hurdlers competing at the meet as well in Dalton Carter, Luke Dutton and Brennan Harrison. All three will be in the 110-meter hurdles, and Carter will compete in the 300-meter hurdles as well.
